The holidays are those special times of the year when we gather together to spend time with friends and family, exchange gifts, and appreciate everything we have to be grateful for. Red wine is a common libation at many holiday gatherings because of its rich, bold taste and how it pairs so well with beef and lamb. While everyone knows that red wine is notorious for staining clothes and furniture, it can also lead to the discoloration of your teeth. Here’s why that happens and how you can keep your smile shiny and bright.

Why Does Red Wine Stain Teeth?

Red wine is high in acid and pigments, and it can stain your teeth if you aren’t practicing proper oral hygiene and consuming it in moderation. When it makes contact with your teeth, the acid in red wine begins to break down your enamel and make it more porous. With your enamel in this weakened state, it is more likely that pigments will become bound to it.

How Can I Prevent Red Wine from Staining My Teeth?

There are a few tried-and-true ways to keep red wine from staining your teeth when you’re enjoying it over the holidays. A few methods include:

Clean your teeth thoroughly beforehand.

Plaque buildup can help stains set in because it can trap and hold pigments against the teeth. Brushing and flossing before you pour yourself a little red will eliminate much of this plaque, making it harder for these pigments to get stuck. It will also reduce your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease. You may want to use a whitening toothpaste if you are concerned about stains.

Drink plenty of water.

It’s a great idea to have a glass of water with any alcoholic beverage to prevent dehydration. When you’re drinking red wine, having a glass of water alongside it can help wash this stubborn red liquid away from your teeth, protecting your enamel from its acids and pigments.

Have your wine with a meal.

Your mouth produces more saliva when you are eating, which helps to keep your teeth clean and lubricated. This will help prevent staining and acid erosion when you are drinking wine. Enjoy your red with foods that are low in sugar like hard cheeses, celery, and broccoli, which will promote saliva flow and help wipe both plaque and wine away from your teeth.

The holidays are a joyous time of year, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to celebrate the occasion. By keeping these tips in mind, you can enjoy your red wine without having to worry about harming your teeth. If you are worried that your teeth have become stained or discolored, consulting with your dentist can determine an appropriate course of action.
